Pennsylvania ranks 45th in renewable energy production and the nation’s future is in electric and renewables.

Recent advocates from the fossil fuel industry would have us believe that Pennsylvania’s future lies in more oil and gas production. Their work is all around us. The legislature gave billions to Shell for a cracker plant in Beaver County to produce the material that makes plastic we don’t need. They looked the other way on poorly constructed pipelines and keep defunding DEP to prevent accountability for methane emissions.

Our elected representatives have fought Pennsylvania joining RGGI, which would finally put a social price on carbon; and they resist any efforts to increase the proportion of renewables in our energy portfolio. Pennsylvania ranks 45th in renewable energy production. Meanwhile, neighboring Ohio has Honda and LG building a $3.5 billion battery plant to supply future EV’s. What do we get? Bad air quality and asthma. The nation’s future is in electric and renewables, from the car you drive to the stove you cook your food on to the way you heat your home. Fossil fuels will be phased out within the next two decades. It is crucial to reaching climate goals.

Some states, like Ohio, will thrive in this new future. Others, like Pennsylvania will be left behind economically, locked in to a generation of bad bets.
