Borussia Dortmund secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League playoff, leaving the Portuguese champions on the verge of elimination. Sporting has struggled since the departure of their former manager, Ruben Amorim, who now leads Manchester United.

Three months after coach Ruben Amorim departed Sporting Lisbon for Manchester United, both the manager and his former team find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Sporting's 3-0 home loss to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League playoffs on Tuesday has left Amorim's old club on the brink of elimination.

The Portuguese champions have failed to win any of their five Champions League games since Amorim's departure, and United, under his leadership, languishes in 13th place in the Premier League. 'We let the game become the way Borussia like it, with space to run into in the final third. We can’t be like that against these teams. In the Champions League, we need to be at 200% — and we’re not even at 100%,' lamented Sporting's manager after the match. Viktor Gyokeres, who was instrumental in Sporting's 4-1 demolition of Manchester City in November, Amorim's last European game in charge, has been sidelined in recent weeks due to apparent fitness concerns. Despite coming on as a substitute in the 59th minute against Dortmund, Gyokeres was unable to make a significant impact as Sporting struggled to provide him with consistent service.Sporting dominated the early stages, creating more chances than Dortmund, but the game shifted dramatically when Dortmund realized the effectiveness of crossing into their box. A high ball from the right found Serhou Guirassy for his 10th Champions League goal of the season, and shortly after, Guirassy delivered a cross for Pascal Gross to score his first Dortmund goal with a slightly awkward finish off his knee. Sporting's pursuit of an equalizer left them exposed to counter-attacks, and Karim Adeyemi capitalized on this lapse to seal Dortmund's victory with a third goal. While the coaching change has disrupted Sporting's rhythm, it appears to have revitalized Dortmund. Playing their first European match since Niko Kovac replaced the fired Nuri Sahin, Dortmund showcased their attacking prowess and defensive solidity. Kovac, a former Bayern Munich and Monaco manager, expressed his satisfaction with his team's performance despite acknowledging that 'it's just the first half' of the two-leg tie. 'We showed mentality, physicality, aggression,' he stated
