The Cavs have come crashing back down to earth after an 8-1 start.

Even though Bickerstaff, who consistently sticks up for his players, has a point -- and he was already proven right once about the officiating with the Last Two Minute Report following Monday’s loss to the Clippers -- the whistle is an uncontrollable part of basketball. That’s why Mitchell was focused more on the correctable mistakes that led to untimely breakdowns.

It’s hard to ignore an essential difference between the four close games Mitchell referenced that ended in wins and the others on this trip that went the other way: Garland, who was sidelined for two weeks because of a nasty eye injury. Every team with multiple stars eventually needs to answer the crunch-time question. When Garland was out, the approach, sets, plays and hierarchy were all straightforward. It was Mitchell’s role. There was nothing to juggle, no reason for him to sacrifice. No one is overly concerned. They understand it’s going to take time. Love’s been there, asked to sacrifice touches, shots and playing time for the betterment of the team. That experience can help.

Just not yet. Not consistently anyway. Even though there have been flashes of brilliance, times when Cleveland’s grand vision comes into focus, Mitchell and Garland have played 145 minutes together this season and have a minus-2.8 net rating. “I think we put together like 46 good minutes tonight and you’re playing against a team where you make a mistake and they’re going to burn you,” Mitchell added. “We may be able to get away with certain things against other teams, but you play the defending champs and guys who have been together for 10-12 years, you have to be on point. We weren’t that tonight. At the end of the day, it’s three losses and if we had won three, I’d been saying the same thing.

Warriors forward Draymond Green, who called second-year wunderkind Evan Mobley a “stud” following the game, raved about his old rivals as well.
