'I grew up watching Kevin Love and I’m thankful because he is a guy that allowed me to come in and ask him a thousand questions, helped me be an integral part of this team and helped with this group,' Mitchell said Wednesday.
“I was shocked,” Donovan Mitchell said when asked about Love following Wednesday afternoon’s practice. “I didn’t know that was in the works. I didn’t know that it would be my last game seeing him. I grew up watching Kevin Love and I’m thankful because he is a guy that allowed me to come in and ask him a thousand questions, helped me be an integral part of this team and helped with this group.”
Because of Mitchell’s jam-packed and hectic weekend, which included hosting a comedy show, being elected vice president of the NBA Players Association, representing Cleveland in the All-Star Game and attending various All-Star-related events and media sessions, Mitchell hasn’t had an opportunity to talk with Love in length about the veteran’s decision to join the Miami Heat.“I don’t think any of us take it personally,” Mitchell said.
When asked recently about the gutsy decision to yank Love from the rotation, Bickerstaff said he recognized the situation wasn’t easy on the veteran but felt it was best for the team and asked Love to stay ready while remaining a behind-the-scenes leader, teacher, mentor, influencer and professional.
Bickerstaff and Love haven’t spoken since last week’s game in Philly -- even though Bickerstaff said he reached out after the buyout news.
