Last summer,48 advocacy groups called for the Federal Trade Commission to ban corporate surveillance technology, following a report focused specifically on Amazon’s surveillance tech, which includes Ring, Alexa, Echo, and Sidewalk.

“The harms caused by this widespread, unregulated corporate surveillance pose a direct threat to the public at large, especially for Black and brown people most often criminalized using surveillance,”that was issued by the groups to the FTC. “Given these dangers, we’re calling on the FTC to use its rule-making authority to ban corporate use of facial surveillance technology, ban continuous surveillance in places of public accommodation, and stop industry-wide data abuse.
