IU gutted out a less-than-pretty 62-61 win at Michigan on Saturday. Here are three reasons why:

Michigan, while undeniably imperfect, started like a team knowing it needed to win Saturday. The Wolverines opened with a sense of urgency bordering on panic, and Indiana struggled to match that.

Outside Trayce Jackson-Davis, no Hoosier looked sharp early. As a team, IU committed seven first-half turnovers. Michigan shot 11-of-16 on 2s in the opening 20 minutes, Indiana routinely late to and exposed on actions pushing the ball at the basket.Foul trouble sidelined Jalen Hood-Schifino, but the freshman guard played through it late to get to 10 first-half points. That complemented Jackson-Davis' 16, and six rebounds. All other Hoosiers combined for seven points.

But it was too much to ask them to shoulder virtually the entire load. At the under-8 timeout of the second half, they'd taken 35 of 47 shots from the floor, and scored 43 of 54 points. Indiana has survived for long stretches this season on the Trayce-plus-one approach offensively, but the Hoosiers needed more of a supporting cast than they could assemble for too much of Saturday's game.

Hood-Schifino and Jackson-Davis toughed their way through enough possessions to ensure the game stayed close. But time and again, when the Hoosiers failed to assert control over the game, the lack of help felt like a key reason why.No one will write a poem about the last four minutes of Saturday's game, as the tired team and the desperate one traded turnovers, bad shots and short free throws.

They forced Michigan into bad shots, bad passes, bad possessions and, ultimately, a bad loss. IU won't fondly remember the means, but the end will do the Hoosiers fine.
