View the start of the new year how you would like to see it—whether it's continuing what you’ve been doing in 2019, seeking out a new job or advancing within your company
The reality of starting a new year is very different from what everyone pretends and says that they’ll do.
Let’s avoid following the herd mentality. Here’s a more reasonable and rational way to look at the New Year. If you are happy with your life and career, that’s great! There may not be any need for you to enact radical changes due to societal peer pressure. If you feel that you need to improve, you’ve probably noted what you lack and have already begun working on what to change.
To make matters worse, if you live in certain regions, the days are shorter, the nights longer, it gets dark at 4:00 p.m. and the weather is freezing cold, snowy, icy and punishing. Flu and cold season starts and either you’ve caught something or are nursing a slight cough and feel a little run down and fatigued. This is not conducive to start your over-the-top New Year’s resolutions.
Avoid placing too much pressure on yourself. There is no need to achieve all of your work-related resolutions overnight. You’ll be working for the next 40 years. It's more of a marathon than a 100-yard sprint. Put together a handful of goals that you truly want to achieve—and not because others say it's what you should go after.
This is a good time to speak with your manager. Ask her about her short and long-term goals and how you can help. Feel free to offer your ideas and suggestions, as this is a time where it feels natural to have this type of dialogue.
