As someone who has actively promoted population growth as a means of improving economic prosperity in Atlantic Canada, there are now signs that the pace of ...
"Even in Nova Scotia, where Premier Tim Houston has set a target of a population of two million by 2060, the current growth rate is well above the rate needed to achieve that aggressive goal ," writes Don Mills.
This week’s announcement by the Government of Canada to increase immigration to 500,000 by 2025 will only further exacerbate the pressures. On the employment side, the increase in population has been largely favourable based on the low current unemployment rates across the country and is clearly filling the gap from the large numbers of baby boomers retiring from the workplace. The impact of these increasing numbers is much less favourable on the housing and health-care sectors, however.
Another increasing pressure point is education. For many decades, the public education system has been managing a decline in student enrolment. We are now experiencing, especially in the highest growth communities, the early signs of the need for more investment in school capacity to deal with increasing enrolment numbers. It is interesting to note, that the fastest growing segment of the population has been those in the childbearing years for most of the region, that is, those 25-44 years old.
