Braid: May's 'Canadian oil' idea would be the end of Canadian oil
A casual glance at the news might lead one to believe Green Party Leader Elizabeth May had a conversion.
May aligns her party with Green New Deal Democrats in the U.S., the young upstarts who want to stamp out the current American energy boom.“Mission: Possible is less about the original New Deal, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s massive public works program to lift post-Depression America out of poverty, and more about Churchill’s courageous World War II campaign to defeat fascism.
Canada would ban oil imports and support itself with Canadian oil during this forced march to zero emissions. The increased Canadian market for oil would support jobs for Alberta workers, even as oil is phased out. So, let’s not imagine that because May likes the idea of Canadian oil for Canadians, she is any friend to Alberta’s plans for exports via pipeline, or even the federal Liberal version of that policy.
Already this year, the early advent of serious forest fires disquiets many people. Anyone who drove from the B.C. coast to Calgary last summer, coughing through smoke every kilometre of the way, could not fail to feel the deep trembling in our world. It completely ignores provincial resource rights, many pro-resource court decisions, the current majority of Canadians who favour pipelines, the scores of First Nations who want to invest in energy.
