The UCP opposes any federal confiscation program but also has to admit that the federal Firearms Act confers legitimate authority on Ottawa.Article content
The bill says “a licensee shall comply with any terms and conditions imposed by the minister on the licence.” Ottawa might disagree. Imagine a moment when federally commissioned agents, out collecting guns, come up against provincial agents with no mandate to seize guns. We can only hope they aren’t armed.
Politically, Bill 8 neatly covers off supporters who think Ottawa wants to steal their property but wonder what happened to all that tough talk around the Sovereignty Act.In 2013, as Wildrose leader, she virtually accused the RCMP of theft when officers confiscated guns from abandoned High River homes during the great flood.
