Toronto animator drew heavily on her childhood for her first feature, Turning Red

After all, the 32-year-old was once a little girl growing up in turn-of-the-century Toronto, obsessing over music and Tamagotchis, shopping at the Daisy Mart, hanging with her friends. All of which feeds into, which is set firmly and unabashedly in Toronto’s Chinatown in the late spring of 2002.

It’s also Canadian from top to bottom, with TTC streetcars rumbling through the frame, the CN Tower in the background, milk sold in bags, and local currency. Shi remembers a shot in the film of coins falling into a container. “In an early pass it was just nickels and dimes and pennies, and I requested that they add loonies and toonies in there. And the sets team was like ‘what’s that?’ and they had to look it up.

Shi refers to the look of the film as “chunky cute,” and gives credit to production designer Rona Liu, who also worked on the director’s Oscar-winning 2018 animated short,“It was our way to push the visual style and language of our movie,” she says. “It’s simplified, the edges are rounder, it’s softer and more appealing. All of that is just to try to support Mei’s story and how Mei would see the world. We’re trying to design the world in her eyes.

Priya only sounds truly excited at the mention of 4*Town, a boy band loosely based on every other boy band of the era. Ramakrishnan, who is 20, recalls similar feelings from a few years back.
