A dolphin washed up on the beach in Sea Isle City on Monday, hours after people had pushed the mammal into the water after it first stranded, officials said. The male common dolphin, which was not fully grown, was barely alive when it re-stranded and had to euthanized because it was in poor condition, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. The stranding center noted the dolphin was underweight and lethargic.
Sea Isle City police were called to the 29th Street beach at the north end of the promenade around 7 a.m. when a passer-by saw the dolphin, according to a city spokeswoman. Police then notified the stranding center. The New Jersey Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory is performing an autopsy on the dolphin.
