The Catholic archbishop of Los Angeles is leading a day of prayer Friday that will be marked by a special Mass at the city's cathedral in response to the Los Angeles Dodgers' decision to honor an anti-Catholic drag group.
Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles urged Catholics in the City of Angels to pray for"an end to prejudice" on the same day that the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team will honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of self-described 'drag nuns,' at the team's Pride Night. Friday is the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Catholic Church, a day that commemorates devotion to the heart of Jesus.
Join us today as we pray, in a special way, for our city and country, for an end to prejudice, and for renewed respect for the religious beliefs of all Angelenos and all Americans. The archbishop will offer Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels for"healing due to the harm caused by the Dodgers' decision to honor a group that intentionally denigrates and profanes the Christian faith," the archdiocese of Los Angeles said in a press release.
“This year, on June 16 — the day of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus — a professional baseball team has shockingly chosen to honor a group whose lewdness and vulgarity in mocking our Lord, His Mother, and consecrated women cannot be overstated," Gomez and Archbishop Timothy Broglio, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in a statement earlier this month."This is not just offensive and painful to Christians everywhere; it is blasphemy.
