The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is accepting applications from documentary filmmakers interested in capturing the work of wildfire fighters and staff during the 2025 wildfire season. The deadline for submissions is February 7, 2025.
Documentary filmmakers seeking to capture the work of wildfire fighters and staff during the 2025 wildfire season have a unique opportunity to contribute to public understanding of this critical issue. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) invites applications for field access through an annual process designed to streamline requests and ensure valuable storytelling opportunities. The application deadline is February 7, 2025.
BCWS recognizes the power of documentaries in sharing information and educating the public about wildfire risks and mitigation strategies. However, the intense demands of wildfire season often make it challenging to accommodate filming requests during peak months. To address this, BCWS introduced the application process several years ago, allowing filmmakers to plan ahead and submit proposals for review. This structured approach enables BCWS to carefully consider each project's potential impact and feasibility. The BCWS team evaluates proposals based on several key factors, including the proposed deliverables, the practicality of the project, and the overall value it will bring to the public. Filmmakers are also asked to articulate how their project will benefit the taxpayers of British Columbia. Submissions received after the February 7, 2025 deadline will be held until the next application cycle.BCWS actively utilizes multimedia content to share updates and insights throughout the wildfire season. In 2024, they focused on providing a range of multimedia resources, including videos summarizing the wildfire season and educational materials promoting wildfire safety. The 2024 season, while not breaking the record set in 2023 for the worst wildfire season on record, still caused significant damage to forests and communities across the province. Wildfires resulted in 51 evacuation orders affecting over 4,100 properties and 112 evacuation alerts impacting more than 12,500 properties. The majority of wildfires (over 70%) were attributed to lightning strikes, with human activity accounting for less than 30%, and the remaining percentage remains undetermined. To stay informed about future application windows, interested filmmakers can email BCWS directly.
