Do not ban social-emotional learning in schools — embrace these skills | Opnion
Ultimately, social-emotional learning is embodied in an educator’s approach to a situation, offering a framework of “chasing the why” when a student is struggling. By seeking to understand what’s behind a lack of focus or disruptive behavior, a teacher can identify a potential unmet need. Perhaps the student did not get enough sleep the night before, missed a meal, had a difficult interaction at home or simply needs to have a brain break to help them refocus.
In our society, it’s often teachers who are on the front lines of our children’s lives, so they must play a vital role in implementing these strategies. Through specialized training, educators acquire practical strategies that enable children to feel seen, heard and supported, particularly those who have experienced trauma. An effective way that SEL is implemented in the classroom is by weaving lessons and activities into the curriculum and into various subjects.
