EV haters are now clinging tightly to the one thing electric cars can’t do: sound.

Does the fact that the new C63 S—asedan—performs better than the one it replaces? Apparently not. I missed the memo, but apparently sound trumps all when it comes to performance cars. Who knew?Now, I'm not pretending sound doesn't matter. The Pagani Huayra R sounds like a dozen V-12s yoked together and makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
But I also love a great car, regardless of how it sounds. I recently let my friend and guitar god Misha Mansoor have a go in the canyons in. This is a guy who's usually driving his 991.2 Porsche GT3 Touring or McLaren 765LT Spider up the same road. Misha was blown away."I can't believe how this thing drives!" he exclaimed over and over again as the Lucid chewed up and spit out one of the world's great driving roads. I watched Misha pound on the thing for a solid 15 minutes.
The car world, with few exceptions, is going electric. That's a big change, and big changes frighten people. It's a very human reaction to say,"Yeah … but" or"What about …" in the face of change. We know. We know that when it comes to traditional performance metrics like 0-60 mph, EVs are superior . We also know that despite all the fear, uncertainty, and doubt, electric vehicles are better in terms of both carbon and NOX emissions than ICE machines.
But how much of this garment-rending over sound is posturing? I argue most of it. The AMG C63 S is in a class with the not-that-good-sounding BMW M3/M4 and the sonically underwhelming Audi RS5. The massive shift to turbocharged engines a decade ago meant unless you had an AMG , your high-performance engine got quieter to the point that the entire industry began pumping pleasing engine sounds through a vehicle's speakers.
