'Do a little research': Unprepared drivers create chaos in Tahoe

Videos captured vehicles sliding across lanes into other cars, and officials are warning people to stop blindly trusting their GPS.

South Lake Tahoe TowingCompounding problems are the fact that some GPS traffic maps are routing people away from traffic and into streets that haven't been cleared by snowplows. Drivers who don't know the area are following those instructions and getting stuck in the snow, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Alexander Sorey told"Do a little research," Sorey said.

The National Weather Service is urging people to reconsider travel over the next three to four days. A winter storm warning is in effect until Monday, when a more severekicks in. Four to 8 inches of snow are expected over the next 24 hours, with as much as 3 additional feet of snow during the blizzard warning. Above 7,000 feet, 4 to 6 feet of snow are forecast. Winds could gust over 100 mph along the Sierra ridgetops.

"Travel could be impossible with near zero visibility at times Monday through early Wednesday morning," the weather service's Reno office ."Strong winds could cause tree damage and power outages. If you risk travel you could become stranded in vehicles for hours."
