DNC Chair Tom Perez says Democrats will still hold a normal convention in August despite coronavirus fears
Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, says the party is still planning to hold an in-person nominating convention in Milwaukee this summer despite the coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m really looking forward to having an in-person convention; at the same time we’re not going to have our public health head in the sand.” While some political observers have floated the idea of a “virtual convention” that would allow delegates and party officials to stay home, Perez said in March that he was not contemplating that possibility. However, earlier this month, the party announced that they would move their convention from July to August.
“We’re planning for an in-person convention and hoping for an in person convention but we’re also — and this is what preparedness is about - we’re planning for every other contingency,” Perez said. “I think we’re going to be able to have an in person convention by the time we get to August 17 and I’m looking forward to it.”
