Denver’s faces a big challenge on the interior Sunday vs. Washington
To find the key matchup Sunday between the Broncos offense and the Commanders defense, look no further than the football.Whenever the ball gets spotted, Washington defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne won’t be far away.In their season-opening win against Arizona, the pair logged two tackles for loss apiece, three quarterback hits and a sack for Allen.
It starts with the Broncos’ interior offensive line in left guard Ben Powers, center Lloyd Cushenberry and right guard Quinn Meinerz. The defensive ends no doubt benefit from the attention Allen and Payne command inside, and vice versa. Payne and Allen, in particular, have been playing together for a long time. Allen was the No. 19 overall pick in 2017 and then Payne the No. 13 pick the next year. Since then, they’ve played six seasons next to each other, each appearing in at least 15 games each season since 2018.According to Pro Football Reference, Allen racked up 30 quarterback hits in 2021 and made the Pro Bowl.
