Some Albertans found what they thought was the deal of a lifetime on a trip to Europe last week — but the price was too good to be true.

Multiple customers booked flights on WestJet via discount airfare website FlightHub from Alberta to various locales in Europe for as little as a couple of hundred dollars both ways — but those deals proved too good to be true.Edmontonian Luis De La Torre was looking to book a surprise trip to Paris for his wife’s birthday in November.

“I was super happy,” he said. “I was going to try to keep it a secret from my wife as late as a couple of weeks or a week before we travel.” But just as De La Torre started to plan for the trip and inform overseas friends he and his wife would be in town, he got an email from FlightHub, refunding the purchase he’d made only hours earlier.

“WestJet has requested to cancel the reservation as a result of a third-party error,” he read aloud from the email. “I was very disappointed . . . I thought that was just sort of deceiving to see those prices but then not be able to book for those prices.”Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
