, makeup artist and creative director of Christian Dior Makeup Peter Philips was prepping models with a classic smoky eye, albeit one that was a bit unconventional. In fact, Dior's smoky eye didn't use aThe process all began when Philips gave Maria Grazia Chiuri a gift of one of Dior's new, customized with her name in the powder, during the 2020 Cruise show in Marrakech.
As such, Philips developed his mascara-less smoky eye for the show using the darkest black in the very same palette. "It's a smoky eye, but almost like a very classic haute couture makeup," Philips told. "I wanted to do a smoky eye that was not too sexy, so I did more of a poetic but tough smoky eye. That's why I. Once you leave out of the mascara, it becomes less about seduction, it's more about a cloud of shadow.
Considering most of Dior's collection was rendered in black, and Chiuri took inspiration from the writings of Bernard Rudofsky, most famous for his essay, "Are Clothes Modern?," it makes perfect sense that Philips opted for a darkly poetic look. "It gives a different effect. The eye doesn't go all the way to the eyebrow," Philips said of the smoky eye's shape.
To get the look, he suggests concentrating the dark and smoky color so that there is some open space between the eye makeup and the brow, making sure to keep the brow light and natural. "I did no contouring, no highlights. I used only the new ," said Philips. "Most of the models are wearing veils, so it was about a pure, translucent complexion."
