Genevieve Whiffen of Corner Brook was murdered in 1955 and found in the Humber Arm. Contributed - ContributedCORNER BROOK, N.L. — Genevieve Whiffen’s brief life story ended in the Humber Arm, a teenager whose killer has evaded police for nearly 70 years.
“I often wished and hoped they would have found out what happened to her prior to either of our parents dying,” said her younger sister, Marion Hutchings of Corner Brook. “Since the girl’s death after she left her restaurant duties on or about January 2 her mother — resident of Corner Brook — made a public appeal for anyone having knowledge of why and how her daughter died, to report to the police. The appeal fell on deaf ears, however,” the article stated.
“Growing up, people would hear our last name — ‘Oh Whiffen, Whiffen, didn’t you have a sister who was murdered?' ... To this day, I have people say to me when they hear my maiden name is Whiffen, ‘Oh right, are you related to Genevieve?’” Their father, Joshua, worked at the pulp mill and their mother was a homemaker.
