Who will replace Dianne Feinstein? It's up to Gov. Newsom.
Dianne Feinstein dies
In 46 states, the governor of the state has the power to appoint a temporary replacement – a person who will fill the seat until the term of the person who died is up. The appointee serves until the next statewide general election is held; the winner in that election serves out the remainder of the term.
She had announced she would not run for re-election and several candidates have declared they will run for the seat.
