Black Diamond and Turner Valley were separate towns when the 2013 flood hit. Now merged, the new municipality is readying for future floods.
“There was also armouring to protect our water treatment plant, which was about a mile upstream,” said Rod Ross, Diamond Valley’s manager of planning and development, who worked in administration for Black Diamond at the time.
Additionally, $9.2 million was received from the Flood Recovery Erosion Control program that went to building three more berms, river debris clearing and two stormwater outfalls. “Diamond Valley is looking at what upgrades would be required to those berms in order to achieve the one-in-100-year protection level, and whether we want to provide even more protection in light of the possibility that future flood events might be more severe and more frequent.”Article contentTurner Valley flood mitigation
The implemented measures were based on the one-in-100-year flood protection guidelines in place prior to 2013.
