Canadian tennis players Gabriel Diallo, Félix Auger-Aliassime, and Denis Shapovalov all secured victories in the first round of the Australian Open, advancing to the second round. Diallo overcame a five-set battle, while Auger-Aliassime dominated his opponent. Shapovalov also won in four sets.
Gabriel Diallo of Montreal showcased his resilience, battling for over four hours before emerging victorious in a five-set thriller against Luca Nardi in the men's singles first round of the Australian Open on Monday. The 23-year-old Canadian triumphed 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 over the 21-year-old Italian, who seemed to tire in the latter stages of the match.
While the first three sets were closely contested, Diallo took control in the fourth as Nardi struggled with consistency, committing 13 double faults and seeing his first-serve percentage plummet. Diallo finished with more unforced errors (8-5) but capitalized on break point opportunities more effectively, winning seven of 16 compared to Nardi's four of 15. Diallo's strong returning game proved pivotal, as he won 66 points off his return compared to Nardi's 57.Earlier in the day, fellow Montreal native Félix Auger-Aliassime stormed into the second round with a dominant 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. The 29th-seeded Canadian, who recently clinched his sixth ATP title at the Adelaide International, controlled the match from start to finish, firing 19 aces to Struff's 15 and committing just one double fault compared to Struff's four. Auger-Aliassime capitalized on his strong serving, winning 85 percent of his first-serve points and breaking Struff eight times. In other Canadian action, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., overcame a slow start to defeat Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6. Shapovalov will now face 16th seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the second round. Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., will team up with Ukraine's Nadiia Kichenok in women's doubles, taking on Australia's Talia Gibson and Maya Joint. Meanwhile, Ottawa's Gabriella Dabrowski and New Zealand's Erin Routliffe, seeded second, will face American duo Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk in the opening round
