A DHL cargo plane crashed on approach to Vilnius airport in Lithuania on Monday morning, skidding into a nearby house and causing at least one fatality. The cause of the accident is currently unknown. The plane, arriving from Leipzig, Germany, reportedly skidded for a few hundred meters before coming to rest. Photos from the scene show smoke rising from a damaged structure in a sparsely populated area. Firefighters managed to evacuate residents from the affected area and extinguish the fire.
Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported that two people were hospitalized following the crash, with one later pronounced dead. The deceased was a member of the flight crew, but not the pilot. Two pilots were freed from the cockpit, one with more serious injuries than the other. Authorities are investigating various potential causes, including technical failure, human error, and even a possible terrorist act. The Lithuanian airport authority identified the aircraft as a DHL cargo plane and confirmed that city services, including a fire truck, were on site.
