Recently discovered structural deficiencies have slowed the redevelopment of the old Town & Country shopping center in Arlington by six months.
The grocer is returning to the shopping mall 17 years after closing its doors there.
Neighborhood residents previously told the return of Winn-Dixie will ease the 'food desert' surrounding College Park. Sifakis said completion of the Winn-Dixie plus construction of a new parking lot, landscaping and installation of new monument signs compose Phase I of the project. As proposed, each apartment building will have 42 units for a combined total of 84. The apartments will be on an outparcel at one corner of the property.
"We are over budget and that's never ideal. But for us, this really is a long-term investment. We're committed to Arlington. We're committed to the neighborhood," Sifakis said."So, that's why the way we're looking at this, doing the project the right way and really getting a product and a place that's going to be a big amenity for the neighborhood, was and is, more important to us than making a giant return on Day 1 of this project.
