Highway 4 remains closed Wednesday due to out-of-control wildfire
Highway 4 remained closed Wednesday morning in both directions due to the out-of-control Cameron Bluffs wildfire east of Port Alberni, as ground and air crews tackled the blaze burning in rugged, steep terrain.
A detour route from Port Alberni to Lake Cowichan via Bamfield using forest-service and privately owned industrial roads. The gravel detour route has narrow sections, sharp curves, single-lane bridges and challenging terrain. There is no cell service, gas stations or washroom facilities on the detour route.
The highway closure is near Koen Road, west of Cameron Lake, which is located about 15 kilometres east of Port Alberni. Highway 4 runs from Qualicum Beach to Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino.Information checkpoints for drivers are being set up at Lake Cowichan, in Coombs near the Port Alberni Visitors’ Centre, and at Chatsworth Road, east of Whiskey Creek.Drivers are being cautioned not to stop and watch the fire and to look out for traffic-control officials.
