Two Alberta paramedics forcing medication on an incapacitated man in police custody is a case study in the rampant discrimination faced by incarcerated patients, advocates say.

The misconduct occurred On Oct. 7, 2020, when the paramedics were dispatched to the Elk Point RCMP detachment to assist a man who appeared to be having seizures in a holding cell.

The patient was "more interested in alcohol and street-drug ingestion" than medication, Hingley wrote. Both paramedics were found guilty of unprofessional conduct by the Alberta College of Paramedics for the improper use of the medication and the forceps — and for failing to properly assess a vulnerable patient. Hingley was also sanctioned for accusing the patient of faking his symptoms.

During the hearing last year, the college said it had attempted to locate the man but felt the complaints were so egregious that his participation in the investigation would not be necessary.Mirasty, who represents Indigenous clients across northern Alberta, said the case is disturbingly familiar. The case should have triggered an external review by Alberta Justice to determine if charges are warranted, he said.-Richard Mirasty
