Watson's signing with the Browns and his statement Friday has polarized both fans and community leaders, but also have some saying he should have a chance to prove himself on and off the field.
The $230 million Cleveland Browns quarterback introduced himself to northeast Ohio Friday afternoon and addressed those allegations.
“I understand the circumstances are difficult, especially for the women fans of this community,” he said. “I’m not naïve to that. I know these allegations are very, very serious. Like I mentioned before, I never assaulted any woman, I never disrespected any woman. I was raised by a single-parent mom, who has two aunties as her sisters. That’s who raised me. I was raised to be genuine and respect everything and everyone around me.
Administrative Director of the Phyllis Wheatley Association, Valerie Chillcutt, said in watching Watson’s press conference and hearing his statement, she sees him as someone who should have the opportunity to prove himself on and off the field. “As a parent and as a grandmother, I think he comes across as an honest person,” she said. “You can’t always judge a person by their appearance, but I would go to say that I believe what he’s saying is true.”Multiple civil suits are still pending. Meanwhile, Watson works to repair his reputation with football fans here in Cleveland and around the nation.
