Gainey said: “Derian was a special person and player, and my connection that I’ve had. The first year that I joined the North Stars, Derian was the [first-round] draft pick of that team. He was 18 years old, tall, very clumsy but had great passion and competitive instincts. He made our NHL team the first year. He came to Dallas and improved in all aspects of his play, and led our team in what a captain does. He defined what the culture was going to be and held everybody to it.
When Gainey first heard that president and CEO Brad Alberts and senior vice president of marketing Dan Stuchal wanted to schedule a Zoom call with him, he thought it had to do with the NHL draft in Montreal.
