Derek H. Burney: COVID\u002D19 will prove an uphill battle for Donald Trump

As a result, recent polls suggest that two-thirds of Americans are dissatisfied with the president’s performance on the coronavirus file.

America lacks a national strategy and a cohesive degree of co-ordination in dealing with the pandemic. Instead of using the two-month lockdown to establish comprehensive testing and contact-tracing systems, initial tests from the CDC were botched and implementation has been sporadic. Many test results take too long.

Biden is smart to lie low and let the Trump administration’s record on the virus be the litmus test for voters. He does not want the election to be about him. If the statistics on the virus move convincingly in a better direction and the economic recovery takes on new life, that would help Trump, but that prospect now seems daunting.

The virus is hobbling Trump’s campaign. He is unable to hold massive Make America Great Again rallies, as he did in 2016. Republican fundraising trails the Democrats and they will be hard-pressed to retain their majority in the Senate. Seven GOP incumbents are described as “vulnerable.” Citing John Bolton’s book as evidence, Biden countered, saying that Trump “talked tough on China but he didn’t get tough. He got played.” His advisors stress that Biden would form a united front against China with America’s allies. Polls indicate that Americans are evenly divided, as roughly 40 per cent say each candidate would be tougher.
