The Denver Police Department is warning residents to be careful after noticing a trend of armed “lookouts” participating in catalytic converter thefts.
Police reported Friday that residents have gone out to check on suspicious noises before noticing their catalytic converters were being stolen and being confronted by an often-armed accomplice.
According to Denver police, approximately 135 incidents of catalytic converter theft with armed lookouts have been reported since May 2019. No one has been injured during these incidents, police said in a news release.The converters, which are an essential component of a car’s exhaust system, are targeted for theft due to the precious metals inside the part. Stolen catalytic converters are often sold to scrap yards, police said.
