Coming off the heels of a string of surprise 2022 pickups in state legislatures, Democrats are mobilizing to keep the momentum going in the upcoming cycle to flip even more states blue.
The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee unveiled plans for a blitz to target 17 state legislative chambers both offensively and defensively, including in traditionally Republican stronghold arenas."After flipping four chambers blue and holding all of our Democratic majorities in 2022, the DLCC is ready to harness that momentum and build on that success.
At the moment, Democrats control 40 state chambers compared to the Republicans' 58, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Local control of state legislatures helped give Republicans a leg-up on Democrats during reapportionment, enabling them to enact congressional maps that helped tilt the battle for the lower chamber in their favor.
All of those 10 chambers are home to a party with a majority of six seats or less, rendering them tight competitions.
