Deforestation blamed on craters that could swallow a city of 70,000
The sandy soil erodes each time it rains due to the inability of the subsurface to retain water.
There are 26 craters in total, and they have measured as much as 400 meters long. The deepest of them drops down 70 meters from the lip. “I can’t sleep when it rains. I stay awake all night,” she told AFP. “I’m afraid of going to sleep and dying if there’s a collapse.” Heavy rain since March caused extensive damage and prompted the municipal government to declare a public calamity on April 26. The federal government approved close to $186,000 to support families that need to relocate. Joao Carlos Teixeira, the mayor of Buriticupu, has requested additional money for a wastewater diversion system and to build 400 new homes for resettlement.
