The Deer Park ISD Book Bus begins its two-month run delivering books to kids throughout the district on June 5.This summer, a bus converted into a library on wheels will again travel Deer Park ISD to ensure kids have the opportunity to continue reading outside the classroom.
"The kids get to check out books all summer, and if they come back and have their reading log done, then they get prizes, we give them snacks," said Parkwood Elementary School Principal Debbie Yampey on Saturday as she stood by the bus during the district'sFrom June 5 through Aug. 3, minus the week of July Fourth, the Book Bus will follow a Monday through Thursday schedule.
When a child reads two or three books over the summer, it's helping them to retain reading skills learned from the grade they just completed. Courtesy of the Deer Park Education Foundation, the bus has an awning to provide shade for"Read Alouds" beside the vehicle. The Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union chipped in with some folding lawn chairs for those sessions.
