Deep Sky, a carbon removal and storage company, is building a test hub for direct air capture technology in Innisfail, Alberta. The facility will pilot various direct air capture projects to identify the most effective and commercially viable solutions.
Deep Sky, a carbon removal and storage company, unveiled its logo during a news conference in Montreal on November 16, 2023. The company is developing a project north of Calgary in Innisfail, Alberta, aiming to create the world's first direct air capture carbon removal test hub and commercialization center. Deep Sky plans to pilot up to 14 direct air capture projects from various companies at the site to determine the most effective and commercially viable solutions.
Direct air capture involves physically removing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to mitigate global warming. This differs from carbon capture and storage, which focuses on capturing carbon directly from industrial emissions sources. Pulling carbon dioxide from the air addresses historic emissions already released into the atmosphere, potentially slowing and reversing climate change. However, the technology is currently expensive and faces significant challenges for widespread implementation
