A Preston drug dealer said he sold heroin and crack because it was better than burgling houses.
Police raided Mohammed Beg's home on Fishwick Parade and found him sitting in the front room surrounded by drugs, scales and burnt tin foil. In his jeans pocket was £2,615 in cash and four mobile phones were also seized, Beth Pilling, prosecuting, said. Beg, 50, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply heroin and crack cocaine, as well as possession of criminal property in the form of cash. He appeared at Preston Crown Court to be sentenced.
Mr Harman said Beg was making "the best progress he made in years" behind bars and is completely clean of drugs. "He said, 'I didn't want to go out and burgle houses'", Mr Harman said. "It is a skewed logic but it is something people who have been in the grip of drug addiction for 20 odd years might think."
Ms Pilling told the court Beg has a previous conviction for drugs supply in 2018. He also has convictions for possession of class A dating back to 2003. Judge Simon Medland QC, sentencing, said: "You have a very sad and regrettable history of criminal offending brought about by your addiction to class A drugs. That has greatly affected your health, your social stability and your mental and physical wellbeing.
"You are, it appears, turning a corner and have realised you can't go on like this. This is now the second drug trafficking offence and if you were to commit an offence in the future the court will have to look at seven years as a starting point."Judge Medland QC said: "You are the only person in the whole world who can actually make that decision. Other people can help you but you are the only person on the face of the earth who can actually make that happen.
He sentenced Beg to three years each for possession of 5.73g of heroin and 8.9g of crack, with nine months for possession of criminal property. All the sentences will run concurrently.
