Whether we like it or not, the immigration policies of both countries are inextricably intertwined.
Shelters along the border have been crowded for months, years even, thanks in part to rumors that keep hopeful migrants coming and to a shifting U.S. immigration policy that has increasingly pushed people back into Mexico and required that those seeking asylumFacing pressure to"secure our border," Biden has made recent sweeping policy changes that have correlated with adrop in border encounters between ports of entry from December to January alone.
Part of the goal was to keep vulnerable migrants from smugglers and cartels by discouraging immigration between ports of entry.Advocates remained concerned, however, that pushing the dirty work of immigration onto other countries merely abdicated our responsibilities and potentially put more people at risk of abuse and exploitation.
At the same time CBP touts dramatic drops in border encounters, tensions have continued to rise in Mexico, where migrants say they face abuse not just from cartels, but from the government and law enforcement officials. Earlier this month,of the treatment and criminalization facing migrants, citing excessive force, round ups, and harassment from municipal police on the streets.
A similar scene reportedly played out shortly before the fire Tuesday morning, where hours earlier “authorities rounded up hundreds of migrants from street corners where they peddle things like candy and wipers to make ends meet,”
