A tragic collision between a bus and a truck in Zimbabwe has resulted in the deaths of 24 people. The accident occurred near Beitbridge, on the border with South Africa, and is being investigated by police. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the crash a national disaster.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — A horrific head-on collision between a bus and a truck claimed the lives of 24 people in Zimbabwe on Thursday, according to police reports. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi stated that the tragic accident occurred near Beitbridge, a town situated on the southern border with South Africa. The bus, en route from the capital city of Harare to Beitbridge, was carrying 65 passengers at the time of the crash.

Nyathi revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it collided with the haulage truck. The exact number of injured individuals remains unclear. Distressing images captured by state media showed several covered bodies scattered across the ground alongside the mangled wreckage of both the bus and truck. The state-run Herald newspaper cited a government medical officer in Beitbridge, who reported that 17 people perished at the scene of the accident, while an additional seven succumbed to head injuries at a hospital in Beitbridge. The newspaper further stated that 30 other passengers sustained injuries and were hospitalized.President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed profound horror and heartbreak over the incident, declaring it a national disaster. He pledged that the government would assume responsibility for funeral and burial expenses. In a statement, Mnangagwa lamented, “Our nation does not deserve this at all, let alone experiencing such a bloody incident at the beginning of the year,” urging drivers to exercise “extreme caution on the roads.” Road accidents involving buses are unfortunately a recurring occurrence in the southern African nation. Drivers frequently exceed speed limits in an effort to maximize the number of trips they can complete daily, while the condition of roads also contributes to the problem. The road where this accident took place had recently been resurfaced as part of the government's ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure
