In a nutshell, the Men’s Shed is a loose international affiliation of groups — most of them, as the name implies, made up of men — that gather to socialize and share stories and skills with one another. In many cases , they work on projects together, shoulder to shoulder — or, as the Ottawa Centre group’s founding member Kevin Ford, who also helped create Ottawa’s other Men’s Shed, called Ottawa Makers Shed, says, “make sawdust.

And indeed, the group that showed up on Tuesday seemed anything but wounded, as the animated conversation over eggs and toast wended its way from steam locomotives and Ottawa’s LRT through discussions about books and university rankings, driver’s license renewals, satellite communications, explosions, the differences between Canadians and Americans from a Filipino’s perspective, and the difficulty these days of finding French mustard in, of all places, France.

I cite the Ottawa Centre Shed here because, notwithstanding the maleness and age of its members, they stand nicely as a microcosm of the city, or a goodly portion of it, with diverse backgrounds and experiences, and a willingness to share their stories with anyone who might show up for a coffee.
