A Sept. 30 event is intended to increase pressure to remove the name of Sir John A. Macdonald from what was once the Ottawa River Parkway.

“It’s a slap in the kisser, or a kick in the groin,” he says. “It’s like somebody is rubbing your nose in it, always saying they’re superior: ‘This dude here, he did lots of nasty things to you, and we’re honouring him and you can’t do a damn thing about it.’”Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Ottawa SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“We’re going to do this every Sept. 30 until the name John A. Macdonald is off the parkway,” he says. “There are thousands of children that died that would have lived if John A. Macdonald had never come to this country.”Councillor still hearing opposition to changing Rideau-Goulbourn despite ward's slave-owner namesake

“Imagine that this oppression was against THEM, that this was the land where THEY had been living for many thousands of years. Meanwhile, the ink on the parkway’s current name is, historically, barely dry. The scenic route west from downtown had long been known as the Ottawa River Parkway until 2012, when then-Foreign Affairs minister John Baird announced the name change, part of a spate of similar renamings brought about by then-PM Stephen Harper’s government’s desire to honour past Conservatives.

“A new name for the parkway is only one small step among many that are necessary,” he added. “But it would be an important move in the right direction.”
