The Durham District School Board (DDSB) will not be asking the health department to require masking in schools. Trustees voted Monday against a motion that w

“I’m very disappointed and angry that we have to do this when our provincial government is sitting on billions of dollars and we now have reports say that absences are still increasing,” said Oshawa Trustee Shailene Panylo, who introduced the motion. “All of our classrooms could have the ventilation and the filtration that they need and we might not even have to have this conversation. We might not even have to consider masking as one of the only tools that we can bring to the table.

“Students are strongly encouraged to wear a mask while at school, on the bus, and at childcare,” wrote Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham’s medical officer of health . “This recommendation includes children under five, if they can tolerate a mask. Members of the public are also strongly encouraged to wear a mask while in an indoor space.”

“I have always focused on the social, emotional, mental and physical well-being of our students,” said Trustee Carolyn Morton from Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog, who voted against the motion. “Without that well-being, many students struggle with their academic achievement and hence the level of success in both elementary and secondary schools. Mental health, to me, is so important and for that reason I cannot support this motion.
