Some of that attention was nothing new — or, at least, it shouldn’t have been, seeing as the Sinfonietta has championed racial and ethnic diversity onstage, in its audience and in its programming for, oh, 35 years now.Chicagoan of the Year for Dance is Michael McStraw, executive director of Giordano Dance Chicago. The company is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and McStraw has been with GDC for a decade, Dec. 12, 2022.
Giordano Dance Chicago kicked off its 60th anniversary with dazzling performances at the Harris Theater in October. That the show was among the best this year is perhaps no surprise if you know this historic jazz dance company, but there was no guarantee they would make it to 60. In fact, the pandemic nearly forced them to close their doors for good.Unsung heroes in the form of arts administrators saved countless organizations from financial ruin.
