HALIFAX, N.S. — Nova Scotians gathered at Province House in Halifax on Sunday morning for the annual National Day of Mourning ceremony.
The inaugural event, aimed to remember those who lost their lives or were injured due to workplace accidents or illnesses, This year's ceremony focused on Kyle Hickey who tragically passed away in March 2008 at the age of 22 following a workplace explosion.Remembering the importance of workplace safety, attendees paid tribute to the 18 Nova Scotians who lost their lives in 2023, either directly due to work-related accidents or as a result of work-related illnesses.
"Recognizing the National Day of Mourning is essential to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness due to work-related incidents while also raising awareness about the importance of workplace safety and prevention measures for workers is essential on this day," said Danny Cavanagh, Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, president.
