David Sidoo will make first court appearance Friday in Boston
David Sidoo was in a “good state of mind” ahead of his scheduled appearance Friday in U.S. federal court, his lawyer told Postmedia, adding the Vancouver businessman and former CFL player hopes to be able to return to his family in Canada soon.
“I have been in constant contact with him, and as a result of the family’s support, the community’s support, and the support of his friends, he is in a good state of mind,” Schonfeld told Postmedia on Thursday, reached by phone at the San Francisco Airport, en route to Boston. “We are prepared to present our defence in court, and look forward to the process.”
At Friday’s hearing before Magistrate Judge Jennifer C. Boal, Sidoo is expected to plead not guilty, and the court will decide on the conditions of his release. Schonfeld said the goal is for Sidoo to be home in Vancouver soon. None of the charges against Sidoo have been proven in court, and none of the children in the case have been charged.
East West Petroleum Corp., a Vancouver-based oil and gas company, issued a statement Thursday, mentioning the “legal proceedings from the U.S. government.” The felony charge faced by Sidoo, conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, “provides for a sentence of no greater than 20 years in prison,” and a fine no greater than $250,000 or double the gross gain or loss, said Kristina Mastropasqua, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts.
