The two charges David Sidoo now faces — conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy — each provide for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison
Prominent Vancouver businessman David Sidoo, indicted last month on a fraud conspiracy charge in connection with what U.S. authorities allege was a “nationwide college admissions scam,” now also faces a new criminal charge of money laundering conspiracy.
Sidoo’s new criminal charge was included among fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges against 18 other defendants, in a new superseding indictment filed Tuesday in U.S. District in Massachusetts. Singer, 58, pleaded guilty on March 22 to racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of justice. He is scheduled to be sentenced in June.
Sidoo, who played in the Canadian Football League before becoming a high-profile figure in Vancouver’s business and philanthropic communities, was charged last month alongside dozens of other defendants in the U.S. case, including CEOs of U.S companies, Hollywood stars and university athletic coaches.
Sidoo entered a plea of not guilty to the fraud conspiracy charge on March 15, appearing in U.S. federal court in Boston. He was released on USD $1.5 million bail, on the condition he does not leave Canada or the continental United States. If a person were to be convicted of both counts of conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering, the sentences would typically be served concurrently, as opposed to consecutively, Liz McCarthy, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, said Tuesday.
