What is your process for distilling an event into an image? Do you take in a lot of news, or do you try to focus on your emotional reaction? While sketching, I skim headlines over my morning coffee and listen to NPR. I temper my emotional reaction to the news with what I imagine others are thinking about the same event. I also try to use visual elements that are familiar to most people, while also looking for some kind of conceptual or visual surprise.A good poster should be arresting. It should make you stop and look and remember.
and James Edward Deeds, Jr. I like the obsessive quality in a lot of naïve and vernacular art. Their influence is a counterweight to my love of modernist designers like Paul Rand and A. M. Cassandre.
