Eight years later, the bloom has gone off the Trudeau Liberal rose. His federal government is beset by a host of problems. Inflation, the cost of living, rising interest rates, housing shortages, concerns about unsustainable immigration numbers, climate change, our ability to cope with seemingly ever-increasing wildfires, floods and other catastrophic weather events, gas taxes, and poorly-delivered federal government services. The list goes on.
By mid-summer of 2023, public opinion polling was showing the Conservatives with a 10-point lead over the Liberals — 38 per cent to 28 per cent — and far outpacing the New Democrats at 18 per cent. The only likely choice would be the Bloc Québécois, but it is highly unlikely that such a parliamentary arrangement would be desirable to either party.
