NDP candidate Laanas Tamara Davidson for the opening of her campaign office, making Prince Rupert the first stop on his campaign tour. Eby is scheduled to make an announcement at DP World Prince Rupert’s Fairview Terminal today alongside regional B.C. NDP candidates. The announcement is focused on job creation and building B.C.
’s economy, a press release stated. Davidson, seeking 100 signatures as she prepares for the Oct. 24 provincial election, welcomed Eby, supporters, volunteers and regional political figures, including Jesse Gervais, the B.C. NDP candidate for Nechako Lakes, and Sarah Zimmerman, a current Terrace city councillor and the party’s candidate for Skeena to the office in the Rupert Square Mall.
“I know I wouldn’t be here without our volunteers, staff, and people like you willing to come forward, ask tough questions, and be here for us the same way we want to be there for you,” Davidson said. The office will serve as a gathering place for supporters throughout the campaign. Davidson encouraged residents to stop by, ask questions and get involved. Eby spoke about the party’s priorities, including affordability, rural health care, economic development and protecting the North Coast.
He pointed to rising costs and economic uncertainty, which he attributed in part to U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies. He said British Columbians are feeling the effects at the grocery store, in housing costs and at the gas pump. The B.C. NDP has made responding to Trump’s trade policies and reducing the province’s economic dependence on the United States a central theme of its campaign.
Eby also asserted that the NDP’s one-seat majority in the legislature has limited the government’s ability to advance its agenda. The party won 47 of B.C. ’s 93 legislative seats in the 2024 election.
“The government has had to spend time negotiating which legislation can pass instead of focusing entirely on affordability, economic development, and other priorities,” Eby said. The North Coast crude oil tanker ban was among the regional issues Eby addressed during the campaign stop.
“We, as a province, as a country, have decided for generations that the North Coast Tanker Ban should be there for good reason: to protect our fisheries, protect the way of life of thousands of people, to protect the prosperity of the North Coast that has been there for generations,” Eby said. Eby’s appearance follows a July 29 visit to Prince Rupert, where he highlighted the Canada–British Columbia Cooperative Prosperity Agreement and its reaffirmation of the North Coast crude oil tanker ban.
During Sunday’s visit, Eby reiterated commitments to maintain the ban without modification, support the North Coast Transmission Line and advance major infrastructure and resource projects. He also criticized the B.C. Conservatives’ response to the agreement, saying they opposed provisions related to the tanker ban, northern infrastructure and electricity transmission. He asserted that the B.C.
Conservatives’ approach to eliminating the provincial deficit could lead to cuts affecting health care and other rural services.
